In August 2000 a market feasibility study was conducted by nationally respected Gerontological Services, Inc., which has done studies in Hawaii for over 19 years. It concluded that the private pay market demand is very high for Hawaii residents 80+ years old who are willing to move into a renovated Palolo Chinese Home and that Palolo Chinese Home should replace its existing facilities with new facilities and services designed to serve the needs of Hawaii’s seniors and their families on its campus and in the community.
Upon completion of the renovation and new construction coinciding with Palolo Chinese Home’s 88th anniversary in 2005, its residents will enjoy comfortable, contemporary assisted living residential apartment units and intermediate care and skilled nursing facilities on a safe and well-planned 15-acre campus nestled in Palolo Valley, bordered by a gentle hill, Waiomao Stream and forest with easy access to Kaimuki and downtown Honolulu. Features of the new facility will include:
- 68 one-bedroom and 20 studio Assisted Living apartments, each with kitchenette, private bath and balcony or lanai.
- a large protected courtyard around a landscaped Chinese garden
- a dining room overlooking Palolo Valley to Waikiki
- a Library and Computer Room with Internet access
- a 40 bed Intermediate/Skilled Nursing Care Facility
- an Adult Day Care Center
- overnight Respite Care Facility
- multiple garden areas for picnics, barbecues, gatherings with friends and family
- a large outdoor area for secure and safe walking and a senior community garden
- a wellness center with pool
The physical plant will provide senior living for a diverse resident population with a continuum of care and accommodate aging in place. All apartments will be private with neighborhood concepts to create a Kamaaina residential setting of fruit trees and country air amidst mountain and stream, inviting for multigenerational family visits.
